LionVolt chooses Brainport Industries Campus for the production of its solid-state batteries
LionVolt's Solid-state batteries are safer, charge faster, and last longer than lithium-ion batteries. The company is ready to move from R&D to pilot production at the Brainport Industries Campus.
The production of batteries is crucial in dealing with many of today’s global challenges, especially in the drive to net zero. LionVolt aims to conquer the market with its 3D solid-state batteries, which are safer and have a higher energy density than today’s lithium-ion batteries.
LionVolt's mission
The company from Brainport Eindhoven – winner of a Gerard & Anton award in 2022 – is ready to move from R&D to pilot production, and LionVolt has chosen Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) as the location for its new facilities. BIC offers the company the accommodation to step up its first production capacity and the ecosystem that supports LionVolt’s growth ambitions.
LionVolt’s mission is to increase the safety of batteries, for example, in aircraft and cars, since flammable liquids are used in most lithium-ion batteries nowadays. LionVolt’s solid-state solutions can solve that issue. In addition, solid-state batteries can be charged faster and last longer than lithium-ion batteries. LionVolt’s unique feature is in the micro-units, like tiny skyscrapers inside the battery. The result is a smaller battery with a much higher energy density.
Reactions
Niels Langenhuizen, SDK Vastgoed: “With the arrival of Lionvolt, we are adding another international and pioneering company to BIC. With this frontrunner in battery technology, we are broadening and diversifying BIC’s profile and strengthening its ecosystem. We are happy to offer LionVolt the opportunity to grow, and we look forward to helping this company become part of our successful ecosystem.”
Kevin Brundish, CEO of LionVolt: “BIC is exactly the space we were looking for. It offers us a location that is based around the high-tech manufacturing industry that Eindhoven is famous for. BIC’s infrastructure is great, the campus has an attractive open space, and the services are exactly what we need. Moreover, BIC can guarantee the energy supply for our pilot production processes, which is a key factor when choosing a location. As we all know, that’s not as easy as it sounds in times of grid congestion.”
A sustainable future
Batteries are essential for a sustainable future. With the existing lithium-ion batteries, it’s hard to electrify the automotive sector on a large scale, let alone all the other industries. We need batteries that charge faster, have a higher range, and are less environmentally harmful. And we need batteries that don’t catch fire. The chance of that happening is about one in a few million. With the massive growth of electric vehicles and wearables, it will happen much more often in the future. LionVolt’s solid-state batteries can prevent this situation.
