The Japanese formula for a meaningful life

There are some areas in the world where people grow older on average than in the rest of the world. These areas are called the 'Blue Zones'. The Japanese island of Okinawa also belongs to this area. It is said that the largest proportion of people over one hundred years old lives on this island. Research into the cause indicates that, in addition to health and vitality, having a purpose in life, 'ikigai', plays an important role.

Ikigai is a Japanese concept with which you can discover your life goals. The word 'ikigai' is an amalgamation of the word 'iki', which means life, and the word 'kai' - pronounced 'gai' - which means utility. The concept looks at how you can give meaningful purpose to life.

The concept distinguishes four circles which overlap like a Venn diagram. Those four circles stand for:

  1. What you prefer to do, what brings you into a so-called flow?
  2. What you are good at. This doesn't necessarily have to be a talent, but just something you can do well and keep improving yourself in.
  3. What the world needs. Something that makes you feel useful and indispensable in a greater whole.
  4. What you are/can be paid for. Where you have no constant financial stress and can lead an easy life.

Where the four circles overlap, you will find your 'Ikigai'. According to this model, a sustainable happy life is not possible when one of these four circles is missing in your life. So you have to find the crossroads where the aspects of passion, mission, profession and vocation come together. This crossroads gives you the reason to get out of bed, enjoy your work, love what you do and give meaning to your existence.

You can decide for yourself how much effort you invest in discovering your talent, your passions, your goal and your ideal job or company. You can decide for yourself how much time you invest in expanding your skills, growing your experience and opening your mind. You can find your ikigai by focusing on what is important, rather than what is urgent. By always paying attention to what feels right, you can discover where your passion lies.

Read tip! The book 'Ikigai' written by Héctor Garcia and Francesc Miralles explains the concept extensively and helps in the search for your purpose in life.
