Integrated photonics

The next generation microchips

Every year, we are using and producing exponentially more data. The current chip technology cannot keep up and is reaching its limits. A solution is provided by Integrated photonics – microchips based on light signals. Which have the advantage of being faster and more energy efficient, resulting in considerable savings in energy. A perfect solution for demanding data traffic and data usage.  In addition, the ability to integrate various individual components onto one chip allows for a considerable reduction of size, weight and production costs and of improved reliability. Although the technology is still under development, it already offers great potential for applications in growth markets such as the datacom, telecom, automotive and mobility, medical technology and food sector. The Netherlands, and especially Brainport Eindhoven, holds a unique knowledge position in this field, which may result in a market worth billions of euros, and in thousands of jobs. Like with the development in the semiconductor industry.

Translate technology into business

The coming years, the challenge lies in successfully introducing the technology to the market. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to better connect to promising fields of application and to attract customers and investors. Furthermore, it requires further steps in product development and the development of a solid production process. Under the flag of PhotonDelta, companies and knowledge institutes have created a national strategic plan to develop a new chip industry for integrated photonics. Brainport Development believes in a joint approach to further develop this industry, which is of national importance. And therefore, focuses on an effective cooperation with PhotonDelta and regional and national partners. To jointly identify and prioritize the most promising companies that could join the Dutch Integrated Photonics ecosystem as customer or partner.
