Collaborating with other companies on energy can be done in an energy hub. In such a hub, the generation, storage and consumption of energy is coordinated between companies and organisations. An energy hub can be a solution if a company cannot get enough power individually.

Why an energy hub?

Companies and organisations in the Brainport region are growing and becoming more sustainable. Because of grid congestion, not all the electricity they need can be supplied. Smart local energy coordination in an energy hub offers opportunities.

  1. By coordinating, more can be done within your existing energy contract with Enexis and an increase in load or a new connection may not be necessary.
  2. Initiated electrification of business processes or transport can continue thanks to good agreements with the other companies in the energy hub.
  3. Sustainably generated energy can be used within the hub, avoiding the need to feed back to the grid.
  4. Avoiding connection aggravation and making optimal use of sustainably generated energy can lead to lower energy costs.

Facilitating energy hubs is also valuable for municipalities. It encourages more sustainable businesses and reduces CO2 emissions. The business climate is improved and can lead to business cooperation on other topics, such as climate adaptation and sustainable mobility.

Phases to achieve an energy hub

Phase 1: Initiate and explore

Find out if an energy hub is a good option for your company or business park.

Phase 2: Planning and design

Explore the energy needs and consumption in the business park. Based on this, design the energy hub.

Phase 3: Realisation

Establish the legal, technical, operational and financial agreements between the energy hub participants and with the grid operator. Implement and test.

Phase 4: Operation

The energy hub is now operational and is being optimised based on the companies' requirements.

Coalition of the Willing Energy hubs

In the Brainport region, 11 municipalities are working together, coordinated by Brainport Development and MRE, to set up energy hubs. Through mutual knowledge sharing, not every business park has to reinvent the wheel itself and hubs are realised faster. In addition, the municipalities have jointly appointed an energy hub director. The hub director works on the realisation of energy hubs at business parks in Veldhoven, Son & Breugel, Nuenen and Best. With a data-driven and systematic approach, energy transition is accelerated.

Kempisch Bedrijven Park

Several companies at the Kempisch Bedrijven Park in Hapert have started developing an energy hub together with the municipality, Enexis and Brainport Development. Current and future energy consumption is being examined to determine which knobs can be turned to provide power to as many existing and new companies on the site as possible. This involves looking at saving energy, adding more sustainable energy sources, merging energy contract values of the various companies, energy storage and coordinating power demand to avoid peak loads. The Kempisch Bedrijven Park is one of three national pilots launched by Enexis. Enexis' aim is to gain experience in distributing grid use in case of transmission shortages.
