3x tips - STRP Festival '24
At the intersection between technology and art you will find the STRP festival in Eindhoven. The 3-day event (April 11-13) features artworks, talks, music and (educational) gatherings that showcase a hopeful approach to the future. The theme this year is 'a matter of freedom' in which freedom is looked at from different perspectives and cultures.
Here are 3 tips to get you ready for this special immersion in technology, art and freedom.
Tip 1. 'Shore of dreams' by Bianca Carague
Bianca Carague takes you into a liberation ritual where you can let go of your barriers with her interactive installation 'shore of dreams'.
Guided by a meditative voice, you can draw symbols representing intentions on digital sand, periodically washed away by the waves. The experience is both a physical and symbolic act of liberation. 'Shore of Dreams' brings a digital therapy practice into the exhibition space and takes you to a familiar place you've never been before. The ritual invites you to ask yourself, "What do I need to let go of in order to face what stands between me and my freedom?"
Tip 2. 'Playing Democracy 2.0' by Ling Tan
Ling Tan, winner of the ACT Award, has developed an interesting computer game called "Playing Democracy 2.0," which allows us to think about how democracy works. Can we discover a new form of society together through a game? Democracy is about freedom, equality and fairness, as well as responsibility. In "Playing Democracy 2.0," people can explore these principles through a huge multiplayer game.
The game is actually a kind of Pong game for 4 players, but projected on a large screen so everyone can participate. Players control the paddles by their bodily movements, which are tracked by a camera. Each time a player scores a point, you get the chance to change one of the three game rules, which symbolize the basic principles of democracy. This changes the game environment and makes you think: What happens if you and your fellow players can make the game (un)fair? It's a fascinating way to think about how democracy works and what happens when people can change the rules.
Tip 3. 'Captured' by Hanna Haaslahti
Hanna Haaslahti introduces "Captured," an interactive experience that explores social injustice through a narrative simulation. In this installation, visitors are represented as digital doubles, playing a role in a scenario where individual freedom is influenced by collective instincts. This makes you a spectator and actor at the same time.
The digital doubles end up in a repetitive sequence of public humiliation, each taking on a role in a dynamic known as the bullying triangle: the bully, the target or the bystander. These roles are randomly assigned to the digital doubles through a narrative simulation developed using a game engine. It is an engaging way to experience how social interactions can lead to injustice and to reflect on our own role in such situations.
