Brainport Eindhoven, with its high-tech ecosystem, is an international leader. Over 6,000 technology and IT companies and leading knowledge and educational institutions work together here on ground-breaking systems, products and innovations determining global transitions. Think of the new generation of circular battery technology for the energy transition, more energy-efficient and faster chips for digitalisation, integration of optical systems and AI technologies for the mobility transition and medical technology for the health transition.

As Brainport, we want to maintain and expand our unique global position in defining innovative key technologies in the future.
To develop technology and markets in a targeted way, we make clear choices for strategic positions within specific value chains. We also combine the strengths of companies, knowledge, and educational institutions by building clusters, innovation consortia, and communities. As a region, we also jointly invest in a strong innovation foundation, with shared (lab) facilities for research and (pilot) production, incubators and accelerators, and attractive (fiscal) innovation instruments.

We focus on the following promising markets and technologies in which we have a strong position and are relevant for solving (future) societal challenges. We inform and bring targeted people together to stimulate cooperation and thus accelerate growth.

In the Brainport region, technological solutions are being (further) developed that impact various markets. Below is an overview of the markets in which Brainport's key technologies make a substantial difference.

Energy

With high-tech and precision technologies, Brainport makes machines and materials for the energy transition, especially in the fields of batteries, hydrogen, wind, and solar energy. The goal: to make together clean energy affordable.

Food

The growing world population demands sufficient and healthy food. Brainport develops high-tech systems for more efficient, sustainable food processing, focusing on quality and safety.

Medtech

Brainport Eindhoven plays a leading role in medical technology. Thanks to a strong, innovative ecosystem, we use key technologies to tackle healthcare challenges like ageing and staff shortages.

Mobility

The demand for sustainable, emission-free and smart mobility solutions is growing. Brainport is working with partners on innovations for electric vehicles, hydrogen, smart infrastructure and digital systems to improve the future of mobility.

Safety & security

Peace and security are pressing issues again, given the increase in cybercrime and terrorism. In the Brainport region,partners are working together on national security and supporting SME entrepreneurs with cybersecurity.

Key technologies

Brainport is working on the targeted further development of key technologies in which we have a strong position in global value chains. We have or can play a distinctive role in the following key technologies.

Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, builds 3D objects layer by layer with various materials for applications, from aircraft parts to food. Brainport has a unique concentration of more than seventy companies with expertise and technology in this topic.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In Brainport Eindhoven, we see that AI has enormous potential and impact on the economy, society, and the environment. It increases labour productivity, and its application is necessary to maintain our leading position worldwide.

Integrated photonics

Daily data usage is growing exponentially, requiring new technologies. The Brainport region focuses on integrated photonics: microchips that transmit information via light, resulting in more accurate, faster and energy-efficient chips.

Micro- and nanotechnology

Brainport Eindhoven is a world leader in micro- and nanoelectronics, thanks in part to Philips spin-offs such as ASML and NXP. To expand this role, Brainport Development supports companies in scaling up, connecting startups with investors, and education.

Systems Engineering

In the Brainport region, companies collaborate on machines and systems for various sectors, with a focus on the end user. Systems engineering, brought in partly by Philips, is essential. The programme emphasises that our future workforce needs these
