Micro and nano electronics

The manufacturing equipment of the future

Micro and nano electronics have become an indispensable part of our society. We have become ever more dependent on electronic components and systems. The appliances we use on a daily basis, such as mobile phones, coffee machines, refrigerators and computers, have been developed based on the technologies and solutions provided by those components and systems. The smallest and smartest electronic components and systems are working together, enabling global innovations. Brainport Eindhoven has a global leading position in the field of micro and nano electronics. Philips, with its many spin-offs such as ASML, NXP Semiconductors and FEI (Thermo Fisher Scientific), laid the foundation for this leading position. We need to take additional actions to maintain and expand this leading position in micro and nano electronics.

The coming years

The regional expertise we have in micro and nano electronics offers many opportunities. For example, the high-precision manufacturing equipment used for micro and nano electronics can also be used for processes that require extreme precision. Moreover, the new markets and the growing need to manage new materials and processes on an atomic scale provide new opportunities. That’s why companies in the region will, with the support of Brainport Eindhoven, focus on further enhancing the supplier market and expanding this market to promising markets. Furthermore, we are bringing startups and spin-offs in contact with investors and inform them about public means, to allow them to scale up rapidly. And we are starting new public-private innovation programs to consolidate and modernize value and knowledge chains. Moreover, Eindhoven University of Technology is starting, jointly with Holst Centre among others, a new institute, which will conduct pre-competitive research.
