Smart solutions for grid congestion in the Brainport region
- Date: 27 Jan
- Time: 14:00 - 16:45
- Location: Conference Center, HTCE, The Strip, 5656 AE Eindhoven

The Brainport region is buzzing with innovation and sustainable ambitions. But this progress also brings new challenges. The electricity grid cannot always keep up with the rapidly growing demand and increasing supply of sustainably generated energy. While grid operators are working hard to expand the grid, the pressure on it remains high. Smarter solutions are therefore indispensable. Solutions that combine cooperation, technology, creativity and courage.
To showcase these solutions and share practical experiences and successes, Brainport Development, VNO-NCW Brabant Zeeland and the RES Eindhoven Metropolitan Region are organising the third edition of the event “Smart solutions for grid congestion in the Brainport region” on 27 January 2026.
Target group
This meeting is intended for companies experiencing problems due to grid congestion, civil servants working on making companies and business parks more sustainable, park managers and property owners. There is room for a maximum of two people per party.

Round 1 (15:15 - 16:00)
Using energy more intelligently: how De Verzinkerij is tackling grid congestion | During this session, Bobby de Meulder from De Verzinkerij (part of the Centre for Sustainability) explains how the company uses smart solutions to manage grid congestion and contract capacity. These include solar panels, combined heat and power systems, batteries for peak load management, mutual energy exchange and hybrid production machines.
|
Full power at limited capacity: how DHL loads its fleet smartly | In this practical case study, Renz Bassant from DHL demonstrates how a logistics company manages the charging infrastructure for an electric fleet without expanding the grid capacity. With a low-consumption connection and simple dynamic load balancing, lorries and buses are charged overnight without exceeding critical grid capacity. This allows DHL to scale up charging activity, even when other systems are still consuming power.

Moving forward together: Smart energy solutions at the Brainport Industries Campus | The Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) in Eindhoven is a powerful example of how collaboration, technology and sustainability come together in the manufacturing industry. High-tech companies, educational institutions, government bodies and entrepreneurs work together in one place to develop innovative solutions for tomorrow's manufacturing. In this session, Huub Smulders, CEO of BIC, talks about the development of the campus and the plans for BIC 2: an expansion that will offer space to new companies and focus on smart energy concepts, including efficient energy use and storage.

| Panel discussion with Enexis & TenneT: Grid congestion today: what does it mean for businesses? | The energy market is changing rapidly and pressure on the electricity grid continues to increase. What does this mean for entrepreneurs who want to expand, become more sustainable or electrify? In this interactive panel discussion, Enexis and TenneT will jointly provide an up-to-date overview of the current situation. Our panellists will update you on:
After a brief joint explanation, there will be plenty of time for questions from the audience. This is an opportunity to talk directly to the grid operators, get clarity about your situation and hear what steps other entrepreneurs are taking to move forward. A valuable session for anyone who wants to know: how do I navigate today's crowded energy world as an entrepreneur? |
Round 2 (16:00 - 16:45)
Innovation as part of an integrated approach: how iron powder at Kingspan Unidek fits into the route to gas-free production | Kingspan Unidek requires a significant amount of saturated steam for the production of EPS, which entails considerable energy consumption. At the same time, the company aims to significantly reduce its CO₂ emissions. RIFT's Iron Fuel technology, which uses iron powder in a circular manner, offers a solution: it provides high-temperature heat without emissions. Together with RIFT, Kingspan Unidek is working on incorporating an Iron Fuel boiler into the existing production process.

The missing link: how hydrogen balances the energy system | How can hydrogen become the missing link that relieves and strengthens the energy system of the Brainport region? In this session, Dennis Chafiâ from industry association NLHydrogen shares the key insights from CE Delft's recent system study. This study shows that hydrogen is a crucial building block for storage, flexibility and connecting sectors that are difficult to electrify. You will hear how hydrogen can absorb peaks and troughs in the energy system and create space for sustainable growth in regions with grid congestion. We will also explore the opportunities for local and regional production and the role of infrastructure such as the future hydrogen network. An inspiring session for anyone who wants to understand the strategic role hydrogen can play in the energy future of the Brainport region. |
Sharing energy, joining forces: the road to a joint energy hub at the Kempisch Bedrijvenpark | In recent years, the municipality of Bladel has been working with Enexis Netbeheer, the Province of North Brabant, Stichting Parkmanagement KBP and the companies at the Kempisch Bedrijvenpark to find a joint solution to the grid congestion on the site. This has resulted in an energy hub in which companies share energy collectively.
|
Monitoring and forecasting: how Philips Best uses a model to maintain control over the entire energy system | At Philips Best, a future-proof energy system is becoming increasingly important within the overall business strategy. Using a monitoring and prediction model, the company prevents contract capacity from being exceeded in good time. The model also supports the phased transition to natural gas-free buildings and the use of solar panels and charging points. This results in a stable energy profile. A major advantage in times of grid congestion.
