What can companies do themselves?
1. Saving energy
Many companies can already save around 15 to 30 per cent of energy by being more aware of their energy consumption. For instance, replacing old machines with more energy-efficient alternatives or starting up at different times to avoid peak loads. Much energy can also be saved by insulating buildings better and using lighting more efficiently. So did Wilvo, a metal factory in Bergeijk. By achieving targeted energy savings, the company consumes over 30 per cent less energy. This allows them to continue growing without needing a heavier connection. Understanding your current energy consumption is an important first step you can take as a company.
2. Make use of energy hubs
Companies in a business park can work together to use and share energy smarter. Such a collective solution is also called an energy hub. Through such a locally controlled energy network, companies on an industrial estate can help each other generate and distribute energy.
Our partner, the Kempisch Ondernemers Platform (KOP), has initiated two of such hubs. To learn more, read the article on Bedrijventerrein Waterlaat and contact the KOP.
3. Consider batter storage
Companies with solar panels can consider storing excess energy in batteries. This allows them to use that energy later, for example, when demand is high. Such a battery makes an entrepreneur less dependent on the energy grid.
Although grid congestion is a big problem that will not be solved in the short term, there are several ways in which companies in the Brainport region can still become more sustainable and grow. Smarter energy use, cooperation within business parks, and the deployment of new technologies, such as energy storage, are essential for continued growth in the coming years.
