"Places like BIC are without exaggeration crucial for the economic security of the Netherlands and the strategic autonomy of Europe."

The Brainport Industries Campus, opened in 2019 by King Willem-Alexander, is getting expansion. Today, the signatures were added to the plans for a building that, at 225,000 square meters, will be twice the size of the first building. If possible, BIC 2 will be even more sustainable than BIC 1. The procedures surrounding zoning changes will start early next year; if all goes according to plan, construction should be able to begin in 2025.

In cooperation with SDK Real Estate and the Municipality of Eindhoven, Barcode Architects and Van Aken designed the factory building as a 17-hectare "factory of the future": "a place with shared facilities where many different companies within the high-tech manufacturing industry can come together and learn from each other, and where an innovative work environment goes hand in hand with exercise and nature.

BIC 2 is needed because BIC 1 "is virtually sold out," said Eindhoven alderman Stijn Steenbakkers. "These kinds of places are without exaggeration crucial for the economic security of the Netherlands and the strategic autonomy of Europe. We were able to see with BIC 1 that the concept works, very good that we can now continue to build together on even more ways to not only imagine our future but actually be able to make it."

Leasehold

On Nov. 9, Gemeente Eindhoven and VOF BIC (consisting of SDK Vastgoed and MAJA) signed the 'anterieure agreement for phase 2' and presented the preliminary design of BIC 2. On behalf of VOF BIC, as with BIC 1, SDK Vastgoed (VolkerWessels) is acting as delegated campus/area developer.

Part of the agreement are the spatial frameworks established by the parties involved and provided for the further design. The agreement also contains agreements about the current and possible future ownership of BIC 2. The land will be issued on a long lease, thus safeguarding the public Brainport interest. The municipality has a non-exclusive option to purchase.

"To be and remain the smartest region you have to be flexible in this changing world"

Ferdinand Gremmen, director SDK Vastgoed B.V.

"By coming up with innovative solutions and with innovation, you create a unique climate that strengthens the competitiveness and innovativeness of companies. Only if you really understand the user can you sustainably continue success," said Gremmen.

Build on

Stijn Steenbakkers calls it an important moment, "for both the companies in the high-tech manufacturing industry in Brainport Eindhoven and for all employees and young people who want to invent and realize smart things to make the world a little nicer and better. With the expansion of the Brainport Industries Campus, we are not only building on the sustainable economic growth of the region, but also on the talent of the future. I am proud that we can continue to build on this international campus. Because our city and region has the responsibility to make a difference on important global societal themes, such as sustainability, digitalization and health."
