The cities of Bologna, Turku, Leuven, and Eindhoven/Helmond are on a mission to become some of the first climate-neutral cities in Europe by 2030. To achieve this ambitious goal, these four cities have partnered with ESTI to address two critical challenges related to the built environment and mobility.
Here you will find all detailed information about these two challenges and how you can join us in tackling them. By working together, we aim to foster innovation driven by shared problem-solving, shared risks, and shared results. Through collaboration with the 100 cities participating in the European '100 Climate Neutral Cities Before 2030 Program,' we are not only finding solutions but also creating new markets and significant opportunities for a sustainable and prosperous future.
We identified 2 key challenges to jointly look for breakthrough solutions and create market opportunities. Solutions that will:
One of our most significant challenges is reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by mobility. Private cars are a major contributor to GHG emissions in the context of mobility. Rather than simply replacing all privately owned internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), our cities are interested in exploring alternative solutions to private car ownership. Taking inspiration from societal changes such as attitudes towards drinking and driving, seatbelt usage, and public smoking, we introduce the 'Last Generation of Private Car Owners Challenge.'Are you innovating on this topic and want to take part in the challenge?
Join this challenge! The Cities 4.0 Open innovation Challenges are developed under the European project CITIES 4.0 - Climate Innovation Through Interactive Ecosystem Summit (September 2022 - September 2024) that involves partners of 4 different European cities: Brainport Eindhoven, Ecosystem Thinking Institute (Eindhoven, Netherlands), Turku Science Park (Turku, Finland), Leuven Mindgate (Leuven, Belgium) and Fondazione Innovazione Urbana (Bologna, Italy). Its aim is to create new synergies between innovation ecosystems in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, following the guidelines of the EU Mission “100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030”.
