The power of the Dutch language for international employees: Joana's story

In a world where companies are increasingly attracting international talent, the importance of feeling at home is often overlooked. For many international employees, learning the local language is an essential step towards making a successful and lasting contribution to their working environment and their personal lives in the Netherlands. Joana, a Portuguese employee at Bright Cape, is an inspiring example of how a language programme not only builds skills but also creates connections.
A new start in the Netherlands
‘My name is Joana, I'm from Portugal and now live in Eindhoven,’ says Joana. ‘When I started working here, everything was new and exciting, but also quite challenging. The language barrier was significant. In the beginning, I mainly used English, but I really wanted to learn Dutch to feel more connected to my surroundings.’
Bright Cape decided to support Joana and other international employees by offering them a Dutch language course, combined with a language buddy programme. This made a world of difference for Joana.
The difference a language buddy makes
The language buddy programme paired Joana with a colleague, Bente, who not only helped her with the language, but also introduced her to Dutch culture. ‘Together with my buddy, I speak Dutch for an hour every week. We discuss everyday topics, from work to shopping and cycling in the Netherlands. That helps me enormously to learn to use Social Dutch,’ says Joana.
Her buddy also found it a valuable experience. ‘What I noticed is that we really build a bond through those weekly conversations,’ says Bente. ‘Normally, we quickly switch to English. Because we keep speaking Dutch, I see her confidence growing. Joana's enthusiasm for learning Dutch is really contagious.’
What are the benefits?
Joana is now able to hold everyday conversations in Dutch, which not only helps her at work, but also in her private life. ‘Learning the language has given me more confidence to integrate in the Netherlands. Now I understand my colleagues better and feel more at home.’
Bright Cape also sees the benefits. ‘As an employer, we not only want our employees to perform well, but also to feel at home here. The buddy programme has not only helped Joana, but has also strengthened the cooperation within our team.’
Why offer Dutch language courses as an employer?
