Creating a more sustainable future

When Nazar Rozkvas left Ukraine to study abroad, he was searching for a university that combined quality with accessibility and affordability. That search led him to Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). What started as a practical decision grew into much more: a career dedicated to sustainability, a true home in Eindhoven, and a strong sense of belonging in the Brainport region. Today, Nazar works at Carbyon, a high-tech startup at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven developing Direct Air Capture technology to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

Nazar’s path to Brainport started with curiosity and determination. “In the last year of school, I took part in a cultural exchange program in the US. Afterwards, I wanted to study abroad, but it had to be in Europe, and it had to be affordable. I looked at the top 100 universities, compared them, and chose Eindhoven University of Technology

At first, he started in Psychology & Technology, but soon discovered his real passion in Electrical Engineering. Both his bachelor’s and master’s programs were in English. “One of the great advantages of TU/e and the Netherlands in general is that Dutch people are excellent English speakers. It made settling in smooth and gave me a head start in building a life here.”

Becoming ‘sustainability minded’

During his studies, Nazar became increasingly focused on sustainability. His master’s project at DAF examined how hybrid trucks could minimize fuel consumption by using online data about the road ahead. “Breaking less often saves a lot of energy. These kinds of smart solutions can make a huge difference.”

That mindset continued to shape his career. Nazar joined Lightyear, where he worked as a control engineer on propulsion control and thermal management systems for their solar-powered car. “At Lightyear, young talents and industry veterans worked together to rethink what was possible. Starting from scratch is often the best way to create real change.”

When Lightyear went bankrupt, Nazar briefly returned to DAF before finding his place at Carbyon. “At Carbyon, I work on  control systems (temperature, pressure, flow) in our Direct Air Capture machine. It is inspiring to contribute to technology that can help fight and reverse climate change.”

“Brainport is a place where you can work on cutting-edge technology and still feel at home. That combination makes it unique.”

Learning the language, building a life

While his career has evolved, Nazar has also built a personal life in the region. He chose to live at Strijp-S, known for its creative and international atmosphere. Sports play an important role too: he joined a volleyball club in Nuenen, where he not only plays but also trains a team.

Even though almost everyone speaks English in the Netherlands, Nazar believes learning Dutch made a real difference. “At first, I could easily get by in English. But I didn’t want to stay only in the international bubble. By moving into a Dutch student house during my education and practicing every day, I learned the language and that opened the door to Dutch friends, deeper connections, and really feeling at home.”

Opportunities and challenges in the ecosystem

Reflecting on Brainport Eindhoven, Nazar highlights both opportunities and challenges. “There are so many companies here, and the ecosystem is full of innovation. But smaller startups could be more visible. Most people talk about the large companies like ASML, DAF Trucks, VDL, Philips, but it’s not always easy to find the right startup if you don’t know where to look. A clear database of smaller companies would make a big difference for internationals searching for jobs or collaborations.”

At the same time, he emphasizes the unique strength of the region: “Brainport combines world-class technology with a welcoming environment, also due to many expats who are seeking friends. You don’t just work here, you build a life.”

Advice for international talents

For those considering moving to Eindhoven, Nazar’s advice is clear: “The Netherlands and the Eindhoven region have everything you need: high-quality education, career opportunities, social activities, and sports. Almost everyone speaks English, so you can start right away. But if you want to feel truly at home, learn Dutch. It will open doors to deeper connections and help you integrate fully.”
