Beatrice Marro: Student in the Brainport Region

I’m Beatrice, a fourth-year ICT student at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. I’m originally from Italy and currently living in Eindhoven. During my studies, I did my internship at Philips, in the Mother and Childcare Unit at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, also known as the smartest square kilometre in Europe.

Why did you choose to study in the Netherlands?

I wanted to study in an international environment where innovation and collaboration are key. The Netherlands, and especially Brainport Eindhoven, offered exactly that. At Fontys, the learning approach is very practical, and you are encouraged to develop both technical and professional skills.

Where did you do your internship?

I did my internship at Philips, in the Mother and Childcare Unit, located at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, also known as the smartest square kilometre in Europe.

How did you get your internship at Philips?

To prepare, I created a strong CV and LinkedIn profile highlighting my projects at Fontys. I also wrote motivational letters tailored to each company I applied for, showing my passion for technology and Artificial Intelligence. In total, I applied for 13 internships and got invited for four interviews. The Philips process included a video interview, online assessments and finally a conversation with my future manager and mentor. Shortly after that, I received the offer. I was thrilled.

“In Brainport, you don’t just learn from books. You learn by doing and creating real impact.”

What was your internship project about?

My project was to automate a complex and time-consuming process using Software and Artificial Intelligence. It was definitely challenging, but I managed to build a working solution that significantly reduced the time needed for the process and improved its quality. I presented the results to the entire department and received very positive feedback.

How do you like studying and working in Brainport Eindhoven?

Being here is very inspiring. You are surrounded by people who are eager to create, collaborate and innovate. The environment at the High Tech Campus, with so many companies and technologies coming together, motivates you to keep learning and improving yourself.

“It was challenging, but I’m proud that I could make an impact with my work.”

What advice would you give to other international students?

Take initiative and don’t be afraid to reach out, whether to your teachers, companies or other students. There are so many opportunities here if you show curiosity and motivation. And enjoy the experience. Eindhoven is a welcoming and dynamic place for anyone passionate about technology.
